Different examples of power Essay What is power? What are different examples of power? How can people gain and maintain power? Power is being able to make something happen or prevent something from happening. You know if someone has power if they are leaders or if they are respected. If you’re a good influence you can also gain power because people begin to follow in your footsteps. Examples of power are political, economic, and social. Political power is an authority held by a group within society that allows for the administration of public resources and implement policies for society. The President has political power and the governor has political power. Social power is the degree of influence that an individual or organization has among their peers and within their society as a whole. Martin Luther King had social power and Malcolm X also had social power. Economic power is organization of the money, industry, and trade of a country, region, or society. Jay Z has economic power because he has money. My essay is going to be about stop and frisk and how often it is being used by police officers and how it affects the people in neighborhoods it is constantly happening in and the statistics on the frisking. In New York City police officers have a program called stop and frisk which is when a person is stopped by a cop and patted down to examine if the person is carrying a weapon or if the person is engaging in illegal activity. This type of limited search occurs when police confront a suspicious person in an effort to prevent a crime from taking place. A stop is different from an arrest. An arrest is a lengthy process in which the suspect is taken to the police station or booked and a frisk is only a temporary search. If the officer uncovers further evidence during the frisk, the stop may lead to an actual arrest, but if no further evidence is found, the person is let go. Unlike a full search, a frisk is only limited to a patting down of the outer clothing. If the officer feels something like a weapon, the officer may then reach inside the persons clothing. If no weapon is felt, the search may not go any further than the outer clothing. In 2011, New Yorkers were stopped by police 685,724 times by police officers and 88 percent of them were totally innocent. 34 percent were African Americans 34 percent where Latinos. 51 percent were though age 14 to 24, only 9 percent were Caucasian.. In the first nine months of 2012, New Yorkers were stopped by police 443,422 times. 89 percent were completely innocent. 55 percent were  black and 32 percent were Latinos, 10 percent were white. Stop and frisk causes people to be afraid of the police because when they are around they have to worry about being frisked by them. â€Å"Stop-and-Frisk abuses corrode trust between the police and communities, which makes everyone less safe. I know people that get very scared when the police come around because he had been frisked a lot of times. Police officers also sometimes use physical force when frisking people. For example, if you are getting frisked and you try to resist, the police will sometimes use physical force on you because they may feel like you’re disobeying them. Stop and frisk is a violation of the Fourth Amendment. The Fourth Amendment says â€Å"people have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.† Mayor Bloomberg and police say stop and frisk has helped New York reach a low crime rate. New York has the lowest crime rate among the nation’s biggest cities, said by the FBI. People call the stop and frisk practice racial discrimination. Aggressive stop-and-frisk practices are having a profound effect on individuals, groups and communities across the city. Residents of some New York City neighborhoods describe a police presence so pervasive and hostile that they feel like they are living in a state of siege. w deeply this practice impacts individuals and they document widespread civil and human rights abuses, including illegal profiling, improper arrests, inappropriate touching, sexual harassment, humiliation and violence at the hands of police officers.

Deliberate Alienation: Surrealism and Magical Realism Critical thinking is a terrible thing. At least, that seems to be a popular opinion. We live in an age where people are willing to look to anyone but themselves for advice on what they should think. Rather than figure out what their own opinions are, they trust the thinly-veiled slant of the television newscasters, the politics-masquerading-as-reporting of magazines like Time and Newsweek. There are fashion shows and magazines that tell you what you think is stylish. Children in grade school and high school are actually discouraged from thinking differently from their peers or from their teachers. Even television commercials or assigned readings in school that encourage positive behavior are only promoting this phenomenon of mental laziness: whether people are told to think good things or told to think bad things is unimportant; either way they're still not doing their own thinking. Lest we become a culture of zombies, it seems important somehow to stop this disturbing trend. But how to combat this kind of apathy? Any appeal to the brain-dead must require them to use that very organ which they are allowing to atrophy. Perhaps some shock therapy is in order. There's a reason our language contains the phrase "to slap some sense into" someone. I propose that the best way to cure such mental apathy is to attack it. By presenting the individual with an apparent reality which contradicts or prevents what s/he is familiar or comfortable with, one would force him/her to spend the necessary cognitive effort to correct or reconcile the discrepancy, or risk existing in an utterly absurd, impossible, and nonsensical world. Community Service Project (CSP 1001) University of Technology, Jamaica Name: Shanece Robinson ID#: 1200775 Year: 2012/13 School: University of Technology, School of Pharmacy Semester: Two (2) Name of Agency: University Hospital of the West Indies Lecturer’s name: Miss Stacy-Ann Nelson Tutorial day/time: Friday 9am-10am Reflection #4 The best part of my community service at the University Hospital of The West Indies was the time spent interacting and assisting the needy patients. Each minute spent at community with them gave me a sense of joy.It was really great to know that I used my interpersonal skills to make these persons feel hopeful in their dull moments. Another best part of my service was organizing the documents, I felt quite active and vibrant about doing it. The worst part however, was being there and hearing the cries of pain of the patients. It was very heart aching to hear the patients moaning the pain they were undergoing, it felt even worst to know that I could n’t help stop the pain they were feeling. Another devastating experience was the amount of hours that some of the nurses had to work, most of them started work from like 8. am and wasn’t off until like 8. m in the night or even later. I achieved my objectives to a moderate extent; I gained a sense of self growth, I assisted the nurses in whatever ways I could thus alleviating their work load. In doing that the nurses were able to offer their 100% service to the sick patients. With this done the patients were being released at earlier dates, thus providing space other sick patients to admit. Also I was able to improve my time management skills, this was achieved by having specific time by which I volunteer and get my school work done. Working by a formal schedule I am now able to manage my time more efficiently.My communication skills improved as well, that was one of my main objectives. This was achieved through the amount of time that was spent interacting with the nu rses and patients. I became more assertive and confident, and as such I’m compelled in a sense to do some more community service. I was able to enhance my problem-solving skills, ability to work in teams, and planning abilities. This I know will be of great benefit to me when I’m in the working world and as such I will surely be an asset to that organization. I was also able to enhance my civic engagement attitudes, skills and behaviors.The community, in which I worked, benefited in a number of ways; the nurses and doctors spent less time searching for files/documents, since they were arranged in an appropriate manner. The patients felt better about their well being, since I motivated, and wished them well throughout their sicknesses. The disabled persons felt a sense of caring ,since I supplied them with the necessary tings they were unable to get for themselves, such as water, bed pan, food, etc. The nurses were able to assist the patients more promptly, since I orga nized their tools so that they were easily accessed.Also it influenced the opportunity of the hospital to expand their mission and reach without substantially increasing costs by engaging a cadre of competent, motivated young people who share their time and talents in support of the organization's mission. By working with youth and getting them committed to its mission, the hospital will be able to cultivate a new generation of volunteers for either their own organization or their broader cause. Service-learning at the hospital cultivated connections between the organization, schools, and other community groups.The organization would benefit from having more csp projects, since other volunteers could assist in answering phone calls and feeding patients. This would ease the workload of the nurses; therefore they would have more time to attend to the patients. Also the patients would be supported emotionally since, volunteers would be there to encourage and make them feel better about themselves. Other volunteers could assist in sterilization of the hospital tools this would reduce the transmission of diseases from one patient to another.This would further reduce the prevalence of diseases in the population. New energy, ideas, and enthusiasm as well as specialized skills that young people bring to the hospital would be increased. The more volunteers in the hospital settings the better it is for the community at large since youths are engaged in something constructive rather than on the streets promoting violence. CSP 1001 could be improved by having more in course work, so that students will take the course more seriously and will thus feel enthusiastic about community service.Instead of having just a few community services classes, classes should be kept at least every other week, so that students will be able to share their experiences about the times spent weekly at the specific organization. Also at these classes students should be taught the benefits of com munity service, so that they will value the course more or rather be more appreciative. Csp coordinators should organize activities so as allow the students to volunteer within specific areas of the school so as to help enhancing the school property as well as services. Government, a system set up by people, provides service to the common people and maintains order in society. Politics is the main influence in the decision making the public policies by the government. The Greeks were the first to formally introduce the theory of government and the idea of democracy. The Democratic Debate starts with the Founding Fathers pondering about the system of government. The Democratic Debate is the clash of ideas between elite democracy: a group of elites running the a small government versus popular democracy: big government control in the society.
